Periodontal Disease

Posted October 11th, 2010 by Dr. John Artemenko, DDS and filed in Dental Articles

Periodontal disease attacks the bone and the gum that supports the teeth. Periodontal means “around the tooth”. Plaque exists in the mouth and is a film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva that sticks to the tooth. The plaque turns to calculus or tarter if it is not removed. The gums and bone will begin to be destroyed when plaque and calculus are not removed. The evidence of periodontal disease shows signs of red, swollen and bleeding gums.

Studies show that as many as four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it! In its early stages, periodontal disease is usually painless.

Periodontal disease is the number one reason for tooth loss. Studies also show that there is a strong correlation between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. There is further research being done to determine if the bacteria and inflammation associated with periodontal disease affects these other systemic diseases and conditions. Another risk factor for developing periodontal disease is if the patient smokes.

Regular visits to the dentist, good oral hygiene and a balanced diet can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.

Signs and symptoms of periodontal disease:

Bleeding gums – Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss
Loose teeth – Also caused by bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers (fibers that support the tooth to the bone)
New spacing between teeth – Caused by bone loss
Persistent bad breath – Caused by bacteria in the mouth
Pus around the teeth and gums – Sign that there is an infection present
Receding gums – Loss of gum around a tooth
Red and puffy gums – Gums should never be red or swollen
Tenderness or Discomfort – Plaque, calculus, and bacteria irritate the gums and teeth
